Instagram posted in a tweet on Wednesday that it was working to fix the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Twitter user @nekostropic writes: &#8220;I just lost over 200 Instagram followers and I\u2019m not really sure why. I\u2019m so confused and upset.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NEKOSTROPHIC (@nekostrophic) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nekostrophic\/status\/1095492489824354305?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 13, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Twitter user @Pinapplebrat writes: Instagram must be clearing out the inactive accounts because I just lost 20,000 followers a second ago.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Instagram must be clearing out the inactive accounts because I just lost 20,000 followers a second ago&#8230;. tf<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Alice (@Pineapplebrat) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Pineapplebrat\/status\/1095510129322147846?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 13, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">YouTube personality\u00a0James Charles wrote that he lost over half a million followers on Tuesday night and about an hour later, actor Don Benjamin, who was once a contestant on America&#8217;s Next Top Model,<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ItsDonBenjamin\/status\/1095552528782024704\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">\u00a0tweeted that he lost almost 200,000.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Major celebrities like Justin Beiber, Kylie Jenner\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0Selena Gomez lost\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1vDbf3y3t8W0DBKwGiBnJJCo5M8zhv5xG4myZMfWrR2I\/edit#gid=0\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">millions of followers<\/a>, according to social media consultant Matt Navarra who has been keeping track of\u00a0the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattNavarra\/status\/1095616588999544834\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">popular accounts<\/a>&#8221; affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The sudden follower drops led\u00a0some people to speculate that Instagram was once again cracking down\u00a0on inauthentic behavior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The company\u00a0has a history of\u00a0killing off\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/2014\/12\/19\/instagram-followers\/20632041\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">fake or spammy accounts.\u00a0<\/a>Back in November\u00a0it said it would be taking steps\u00a0to<a href=\"https:\/\/instagram-press.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/19\/reducing-inauthentic-activity-on-instagram\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">\u00a0target accounts<\/a>\u00a0using third-party apps and bots to boost their popularity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;This type of behavior is bad for the community, and third-party apps that generate inauthentic likes, follows and comments violate our\u00a0Community Guidelines\u00a0and\u00a0Terms of Use,&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/instagram-press.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/19\/reducing-inauthentic-activity-on-instagram\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">\u00a0Instagram said in a press release<\/a>\u00a0in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Despite concerns that another social media purge is happening, Instagram tweeted that the drop in followers is due to a bug that the company is looking into.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;We\u2019re aware of an issue that is causing a change in account follower numbers for some people right now.
